YDPR believes that access to safe and legal abortions performed by physicians is a woman’s fundamental right, and this unfathomable scenario we are faced with today deserves our strongest repudiation.

Our democracy cannot allow for just a few individuals to dictate women’s reproductive rights. An extremist group among those in the high court #SCOTUS are poised to overturn Roe v. Wade, mounting a direct assault on women’s constitutional, fundamental, and human rights. As a people who believe in liberty and freedom, we cannot allow those with views that put women’s rights in grave danger dictate the decisions that women need to make over their body, their livelihood, and that of their families. Overturning Roe will not stop abortions, but it will certainly send us back to the times of “back alley” abortions where women’s lives were not only put a risk, but ultimately died. The decision to terminate a pregnancy for any woman is one of the most difficult decisions to be made and, far from what extremist groups represent, it is never made lightly; this soon-to-be announced reversal will criminalize making a very difficult choice in order to avoid even more difficult consequences to their lives. Decisions involving women’s healthcare must be made between her and her physician. Decisions over an individual’s own body are decisions that should never be imposed by another and every single individual—regardless of their gender— deserves to have absolute control over their bodily autonomy.

The empirical evidence is clear, Roe v. Wade has saved thousands of lives by giving women the individual opportunity to make the very tough decision to terminate a pregnancy without putting their lives at risk. Overturning Roe’s recognition that a woman’s right to choose is a fundamental right is un-American. “Women’s rights are human rights” and we must unite as Americans to fight against any decision that does not recognize them as such. Women in America, and around the world, deserve much better than this. The government does not interfere with men’s healthcare decisions and women in America should be treated equally.

Since Roe v. Wade, social attitudes and the recognition of women’s equal rights have drastically changed. We are now a more open, outspoken society concerned with equality, and open to understand the plight of each human being’s experiences. We will fight, not just for women’s rights, but for the rights of all of our brothers and sisters. Young DEMS, all over this country need to organize, speak up, be loud, and let their voices be heard in our nation’s capital.

We echo the words of the Young Democrats of America: Our party must work harder to fight back against this oppression. We call on President Biden and Congress to stop at nothing to ensure that we can protect all people’s right to reproductive care, and a woman’s fundamental right to choose.

Even though the Court’s opinion was leaked before it has been officially rendered in June, the time to act is now! The future of women’s fundamental right to choose is going to come down to the States. We strongly encourage our members to make their voices heard. We are all entitled to have our fundamental human rights protected.

Lastly, this assault on women’s fundamental rights should remind everyone how much elections really matter!
